What is MISTFOLD matcha?
MISTFOLD™ is a New Zealand matcha brand supplying cafés, bakeries, cake shops and food businesses. It is the FG Group’s second New Zealand house brand, after Thesaurus®.
The two brands never borrow from each other. Thesaurus® is our New Zealand marine-ingredient brand, and it travels from New Zealand to China. MISTFOLD is high-mountain matcha, and it travels the other way — from the tea mountains to New Zealand shops. Name, mark, packaging and customers are all separate. One brand, one story.
The brand is run in New Zealand by FG NZ Trade & Logistics Ltd. The trade mark applicant is the holding company, Forever Gain HK Holding Ltd — the same owner as Thesaurus® (NZ registration 1316638), so the group’s brand assets sit in one place.
Is MISTFOLD a registered trade mark in New Zealand?
Not yet — the process is under way. In September 2026 Forever Gain HK Holding Ltd filed Class 30 proceedings for the MISTFOLD word mark and device mark, and IPONZ completed its Search and Preliminary Advice on 17–18 September. After the formal application come examination, advertisement and a three-month opposition period before registration.

Filing a New Zealand trade mark from Hong Kong: three things we learned
2. “Matcha” is not an IPONZ pre-approved term. The NZ$70 pre-approved-terms route cannot say matcha; the search-and-advice route has no such limit.
3. You need a New Zealand or Australian address for service, and a RealMe login. Having a New Zealand entity makes this step straightforward.
For anyone in Hong Kong or mainland China building their own brand in New Zealand: the route works, as long as the goods list is right from day one — the search and the formal application must use the same wording, word for word. (Fees per the IPONZ fee schedule, excluding GST.)
Why “MISTFOLD”? The brand story
Mist is the growing condition. Fold is what the mountain and the mist do — ridge behind ridge, layer over layer. The Chinese name, 霧疊, says the same thing: mist, stacked.
Matcha has never belonged to just one place.
Say “matcha” and people picture one country, one famous garden. But what turns a tea leaf into good matcha has never been a border. It is the growing conditions: altitude, the swing between day and night, and cloud that does not lift.
On the high mountains, cloud and mist linger all year round. The tea grows slowly between altitude and temperature, wrapped layer upon layer in natural mist. A lowland garden needs shade cloth pulled over by hand; up here the shade is simply there, every day, for most of the year. Slow is the whole argument. It gives a leaf that is layered rather than flat, delicately sweet rather than merely grassy.
Matcha is the whole leaf, stone-milled. Whisk a bowl and you are not drinking an infusion — you are drinking the leaf itself, and everything the mountain gave it: light, mist and time.
We call it World High Mountain Cloud Mist Matcha. It is not an extension of any existing standard. It is a possibility redefined by mountain and mist.
What we want is for that green, grown in the clouds, to find its way into New Zealand’s bakeries, food shops and cafés — a latte that stays the same green cup after cup, a cake that still tastes of tea when it comes out of the oven, and an owner who no longer wonders where next month’s tin is coming from. That is the better experience MISTFOLD is here to bring.
WORLD HIGH MOUNTAIN CLOUD MIST MATCHA
Our leaf is grown and stone-milled in the high-mountain tea districts of Guizhou, in southwest China — a plateau whose altitude and near-permanent cloud cover give exactly the conditions above. The mountain is the story; Guizhou is the address.

The mark is an open gold ring with a layered mist ridge inside. Hold it one way and it is the rim of a tea bowl; hold it another and it is a window onto the tea mountains. The brand colour is deep mist blue, not green — matcha green is kept for grade labels only, because on a shelf full of green tins, mist is what you notice.
Which matcha grade for cafés, bakeries and food shops?
Cafés making drinks: Summit or Ridge. Bakeries and cake shops: Ridge or Terrace. Ridge is the one grade that does both jobs.
| Grade | Positioning | Best for | Samples |
|---|---|---|---|
| MISTFOLD Summit MF-M01 | Ceremonial | Straight matcha, koicha, premium lattes — drinks only | In stock |
| MISTFOLD Ridge MF-M03 | Café & Bakery | Matcha lattes, iced matcha, cakes, fillings, soft serve | In stock |
| MISTFOLD Terrace MF-M04 | Baking & Culinary | Cookies, ice-cream bases, high-volume production | Made to order |
Why not bake with Summit? Heat and sugar flatten the fine aroma of a ceremonial grade, so it is wasted in the oven. Ridge is the opposite: in milk it holds its colour and tea character through a full-size latte without being over-dosed, and in the oven it stands up to heat and sugar. Specifications and certificates of analysis go out with every quote.
Why a New Zealand-based matcha supplier matters
For a New Zealand shop, a steady supply and a person you can reach matter more than any origin story. MISTFOLD’s import, clearance, storage and delivery all happen in New Zealand.
- Local importer: FG NZ Trade & Logistics Ltd, MPI-registered food importer (FIMP013439), NZBN 9429053403940
- Local stock: Hobsonville, Auckland — samples and top-ups ship from here
- Local contact: the person answering your email and phone is in New Zealand
- Paperwork travels with the tea: processing under an internationally audited food-safety system, with pesticide and heavy-metal testing to European and New Zealand limits
There is also the market. According to published Kyoto auction results, the average price of first-flush machine-harvested tencha rose from ¥5,402/kg in 2024 to ¥14,541/kg in 2025 — up 169% in a single season. For a café pouring dozens of matcha lattes a day, or a bakery baking matcha cakes every week, that is not only a cost problem; it is a question of whether next month’s supply exists. A steady, local alternative is the reason we brought MISTFOLD to New Zealand.
How can NZ cafés and bakeries get free matcha samples?
New Zealand cafés, bakeries, cake shops and dessert kitchens can request a free 25g sample on the samples page at mistfold.co.nz. Samples are for businesses only, not individual consumers.
Add your business name and the grade you want to try. The form turns it into a message that you send us by WhatsApp, WeChat or email, and the sample ships from Hobsonville.
Message us directly. No form, no waiting — but tell us your business name and which grade you are after, or we will only have to ask.
The WeChat button opens WeChat directly on your phone; on a computer, WeChat needs to be installed.
Quick check: which grade should you try first?
| Your situation | Try |
|---|---|
| Mostly matcha drinks, and customers order it straight or as koicha | Summit + Ridge |
| Matcha lattes and iced matcha, plus matcha cakes | Ridge |
